Hilltop Hoods interactive film pushes boundaries of mobile technology
Using the latest web technologies, Australian hip hop group Hilltop Hoods and Google Play Music collaborated to bring life to the animated film of the band’s song entitled “Through the Dark.” The film is an immersive 3D experience, and Google Play has broken fresh ground during its production.
Through the Dark is a song written by Hilltop Hoods’ MC Dan Smith about his 8-year old son Liam’s battle with leukemia. The 3D film creatively shows 2 of the principal emotions that Dan went through in the ordeal—fear represented by the dark scenes, and hope by the light scenes.
On a desktop computer, you can control the experience by scrolling up or down. Whereas on a mobile device, you do so by rotating your device left or right.
Mobile devices get a notification that says “This experience pushes the boundaries of mobile technology. Please close other tabs and charge our battery above 50%.” The website also says that the team who built the experience had to develop new tools to fuse traditional animation methods with WebGL.
We’re thinking this video may be a good litmus test to see if your device hardware/software is at the cutting edge of web technology.
