New Game Engine Wants to Challenge Unity
It took one guy three years to build from scratch the latest game engine to hit version 1.0. Called Game Pencil, it is referred to by creator Nathan Hurde of PawByte as an engine “made by an indie for indies.” And we really admire this guy’s dedication to the cause!

Game Pencil is a 2D video game creation tool. It was conceived with the idea of achieving cross-platform development that is intuitive. Its creator will probably go through an uphill battle to compete with the likes of Unity, but they seem to be confident about their product. Here’s Hurde’s reply on reddit when asked why anyone should choose Game Pencil over Unity:

PawByte, the devs behind Game Pencil, is challenging Unity.
And as we all know, healthy competition is good, especially for the consumers.

Okay, this demo is not helping the cause, but creators say it was due to lack of time.
Just reading the description of this engine on PawByte’s website will probably make even someone, whose coding knowledge is diddly squat, want to turn into a game developer! Who knows you just might be the next Flappy Bird phenomenon. If you want to support Game Pencil’s creator, visit their website and get the engine.
